About the Program

Art Encounters is a year-long outdoor sculpture exhibit that showcases a number of sculptures, in various media and styles, displayed in highly visible areas in Castle Rock, Highlands Ranch, Lone Tree and Parker. The project is designed to promote public interest in art, develop community pride and draw visitors to the retail or civic areas where they are displayed.

Program Benefits

  • Artists have the opportunity to spread their name and work throughout Douglas County and beyond.
  • Artists who submit more than one piece could possibly have more than one piece selected. This could result in one piece in one jurisdiction and one piece in another for greater publicity.
  • This program will be marketed in Castle Rock, Highlands Ranch, Lone Tree and Parker.
  • Selected artists will receive a $500 stipend, payable after completion of the installation process.
  • Artists have the chance for their artwork to be purchased.
  • "DCAE boasts 4 sculpture purchases in 3 years of the program." - Christopher Romero

Public Art Selection Process

A Public Art Advisory Committee with representatives from throughout Douglas County selects the artwork from applications submitted for this program. The Committee functions under the direction of the Douglas County Cultural Council. The Public Art Advisory Committee selects the art and determines which art goes in Castle Rock, Highlands Ranch, Lone Tree and Parker. The displayed work is identified with the artist name, title of piece, year and the Art Encounters logo.

The Art Encounters exhibit features both traditional and cutting-edge sculptures throughout Douglas County, Colo.

2012 Calendar

January 2012
Call for entries for the 2012-2013 program year. Applications are due by Feb. 14, 2012.

Early March 2012
The Public Art Advisory Committee selects the artwork from the entries and then randomly draws each piece to determine which piece will be displayed at each jurisdiction’s location.

Following selection, artists will receive notifications indicating if their work has been selected. The jurisdiction will be in touch with artists whose work has been selected and provided with a contract. Failure to sign and return the contract by the specified date may result in the artist being dismissed from the exhibition.

May/June 2012
The previous year's sculptures will be removed to make room for sculptures for the 2011-2012 program year. It is up to each jurisdiction to schedule installation for the sculptures in coordination with the artist. Artists and the public will be invited to a kick-off celebration.

Marketing and Promotion

The Public Art Advisory Committee reserves the right to reproduce and distribute artwork images through print and electronic media for promotion of the exhibit. The copyright for the work is retained by the artist.

This program will be promoted throughout Douglas County and surrounding areas.
