A building permit is an official document or certificate issued by the authority having jurisdiction which authorizes performance of a specified activity.

Your building permit allows the Code Official to protect the occupants of buildings by reducing the potential hazards of unsafe construction and ensuring public health, safety and welfare.

By following code guidelines, your completed project will meet minimum safety standards and will be less likely to cause injury to you, your family, your friends or future owners.

To obtain a permit, the applicant must first file an application in writing on a form furnished by the Douglas County Building Division for that purpose. Such application shall:

  1. Identify and describe the work to be covered by the permit for which the application was made.
  2. Describe the land on which the proposed work is to be done by legal description, street address or similar description that will readily identify and definitely locate the proposed building or work.
  3. Indicate the use and occupancy for which the proposed work is intended.
  4. Be accompanied by construction documents and other information as required.
  5. State the valuation of the proposed work.
  6. Be signed by the applicant, or the applicant’s authorized agent.
  7. Give other data and information as required by the building official.

The building official shall receive applications, review construction documents and issue permits for the installation and alteration of buildings and structures, inspect the premises for permits that have been issued and enforce compliance with the provisions of the adopted code.

The best way to find out if your project will require a permit is to call the Building Division at 303.660.7497. Permits are typically required for, but not limited to:

Help us Help you in getting your Plan Review

All building permit applications are taken in on a first-come, first-serve basis. Plan review turnaround times fluctuate depending on the volume and type of applications received into the Division.

You can assist us with our turnaround times by checking the status of your permit application through our automated systems.

You can check the status of your permit application from this site from Building Online Services (on the left hand side of this page), Search Permits -or- call our office at 303.660.7497. Press option #1. You can say "Permit Status" or Press 5 on your keypad when prompted, simply enter your permit number.

Once all phases of the plan review process have been completed and approved, the status of the permit will change from one of "In Review" to "Approved". Once the plan has been "Approved" the permit is then ready to be issued.

If our Review Staff has additional questions or needs more information during the review process, they will be in contact with you.
