Aerospace

The second-largest aerospace economy in the nation is right here in Colorado.  The state’s aerospace economy consists of businesses providing products and services for commercial uses, the military, and space exploration.  The Metro Denver area is in first place among the 50 largest U.S. metro areas for private aerospace employment.  Douglas County’s location between major commercial operations in the Metro Denver area such as Ball Aerospace, Boeing, ITT Corporation, Lockheed Martin, Merrick & Company, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon, and the United Launch Alliance, and the military space programs and national defense command centers in Colorado Springs makes it perfectly positioned to access aerospace-related businesses and workforce.

In addition to the internationally known National Space Symposium held annually in Colorado Springs, the Colorado Space Coalition is a state-wide industry advocate.  More than 300 aerospace businesses and suppliers are listed in the Coalition’s directory.

The four military commands located in Colorado provide a significant market for aerospace related goods and services.

Broadcasting/Telecom

As part of the Metro Denver area, Douglas County is a center for telecommunications.  The two largest satellite television providers each have a major presence here.  In addition, skilled telecom workers abound in the Douglas County and surrounding areas, with over 40,000 broadcasting and telecommunications workers living in the Metro Denver area.

"One bounce" satellite communications puts Douglas County in contact with both Europe and the Pacific Rim in the same business day. Due to its unique geographic location on the 105th meridian, Denver is the only major city in the United States offering single-relay, one-bounce uplinks to world satellite networks and real-time connections to six out of seven continents in a single business day.

Medical

Douglas County is home to a robust healthcare and medical-related industry – from health care delivery to medical device manufacturing to university and continuing education training.  The County’s "Medical Mile" located along the E-470 tollway is anchored on each end by a major hospital.  In between are numerous educational, medical manufacturing and medical services companies.

The healthcare and medical-related industry is expected to be one of the fastest growing industries in the next five years, both in the Metro Denver region and nationally. 

IT/Software

Colorado boasts the third-highest concentration of high-tech workers in the country (Cyberstates 2009 report by TechAmerica).  Douglas County is located right in the middle of that concentration of workers, and is home to many large and small information technology companies.  Furthermore, Douglas County’s quality of life makes it easy to attract and retain skilled employees.

Douglas County will be home to an additional 500 IT jobs as Charles Schwab Co. implements its expansion announced in January of 2009.  Both large and small companies have a place here - Colorado ranks third nationally in the creation of new information technology companies, demonstrating a thriving entrepreneurial community.

Financial Services

Banking and finance, investment, and insurance companies make up an important part of Douglas County’s economy.  As part of the Metro Denver area, Douglas County offers an important advantage – “one-bounce” satellite communications to six of the seven continents in the same business day.   Another important asset is the minimal risk of natural disasters occurring in the Rocky Mountain region.

With a highly educated workforce – 58.4% of Douglas County’s population age 18 and over have a bachelor’s degree – it’s easy for companies in the financial services industries to find qualified employees.
