Douglas County benefits from a sunny and moderate climate without the extremes of temperature seen in the Rocky Mountains immediately to the west. The County averages over 300 days of sunshine a year. The County can have cold and snowy weather in the winter, but it is usually of short duration. In December it is not unusual to be able to golf in the morning in Douglas County and ski in the afternoon in the nearby mountains. Elevations in Douglas County range from approximately 5800 feet above sea level in the east to over 9700 feet at Devil’s Head in the foothills.

Natural disasters (hurricanes, earthquakes, etc.) are rare in Douglas County relative to the east and west coasts and the southern United States.
