  • Douglas County is located near the geographic center of Colorado. With 843 square miles it ranks #47 in size among the 64 counties in the state of Colorado.
  • A total of 20% of the net gain in jobs in the 7-County Metro Area from 2007 to 2008 were located in Douglas County.

Douglas County Residents – Labor Force

  • Douglas County is the seventh most educated region in the U.S. with 58.4% of the residents aged 18 years and over having some sort of college degree.
  • 54% of employed Douglas County residents are in management, professional and related occupations, which places the County in the top 20 in the Nation.
  • Douglas County workers in the prime ages of 35 to 54 make up 55.1% of the labor force compared to 44.6% for all workers in Colorado.
  • The median age of Douglas County residents is 36.6, compared to 35.7 for Colorado and 36.8 for the Nation
  • Veterans represent 10.9% of the population aged 18 years and over. That share is almost the same as the Nation.

Douglas County Housing Stock

  • Housing type - 78% of the housing is single family homes, 12% apartments, 10% condos & townhouses.
  • Location - 10% of the housing stock is in rural areas, 90% in urban areas.  Within the urban areas, 44% is incorporated towns, 35% is Highlands Ranch, and 11% is in the Separated Urban Areas of The Pinery, Castle Pines Village, and Roxborough.
  • Age - 43% of the housing stock was built since 2000.  (43% is less than 10 years old.)  80% was built since 1990.
  • Price – In 2010 Douglas County ranked fourth among six Metro Area counties for median cost per square foot at $140 per square foot. 
  • Average apartment rent in Douglas County was $1,099 in the first quarter of 2011. Median apartment rent in Douglas County was $1,015 in the second quarter of 2011.
  • Apartment vacancy rates in Douglas County were marked at 3.8% in the second quarter of 2011.

Nonresidential Development

  • There are 39.5 million square feet of marketable nonresidential space in Douglas County. The peak year the County has seen for production of new space was 2001, when 3.8 million square feet were completed. The average annual production from 2000 through 2009 has been 2 million square feet. A total of 1.1 million square feet of new space was finished in 2009, and an additional .5 million square feet was completed in 2010.
