Election Judges

Election Judges must meet the following qualifications by the date of the election they are scheduled to work:

  • Be a U.S. Citizen
  • Be a registered elector who resides in Douglas County
  • Be at least 18 years old (students 16 and older can be Student Election Judges)
  • Be willing to serve on Election Day for the entire process
  • Be physically and mentally able to perform the duties of an Election Judge
  • Attend a mandatory Election Judge class prior to each election they work
  • Never been convicted of any election offense or any type of fraud
  • Not be related to any candidate on the ballot
  • Consent to a criminal background check

Student Election Judges

Student Election Judges must meet the following requirements before the date of the election at which they are scheduled to work:

  • Be a U.S. citizen
  • Be a Junior or Senior in a Douglas County public or private high school
  • Be at least 16 years old
  • Be willing to serve on Election Day for the entire process
  • Be physically and mentally able to perform the duties of an Election Judge
  • Attend mandatory Election Judge training prior to each election in which they are working
  • Not be related to any candidate on the ballot
  • Have written consent of a parent of legal guardian
  • Have the approval of their school's principal or designated administrator

Opportunities

There are many ways for an Election Judge to serve:

Poll Manager

  • Manages the entire site
  • Experienced Election Judges are preferred to fill this role

Supervisor

  • Assists the Poll Manager
  • Trained to perform all duties within the polling place
  • Experienced Election Judges are preferred to fill this role
  • Responsible for managing and coordinating all other Election Judges in a Polling Place
  • Maintains communication with the Elections Office
  • Interacts with other Election Judges to help solve Election Day problems
  • Computer and typing skills are a requirement for this role

Pollbook Judge

  • Manages the electronic pollbook
  • Verifies voter identification
  • Checks that voter is qualified to vote in Douglas County
  • Checks that voter is qualified to vote in the current election
  • Gives the voter credit for voting
  • Responsible for updating voter information such as address
  • Computer and typing skills are a requirement for this role

Ballot Judge

  • Manages issuance of ballots in both paper and electronic form

Voter Aide

  • Checks that the voter has proper ID
  • Manages voters and foot traffic in the polling place
  • Welcomes voters to the polling place
  • Explains how the polling place works
  • Monitors the ballot box
  • Available to assist voters while they are in the voting booth
  • Answers questions regarding Electronic Voting Equipment
  • Responsible for helping to accommodate disabled voters

Provisional Judge

  • Manages the issuance and receipt of provisional ballots
  • Assists voters with questions

Ballot Round Up

  • Manages pick up and delivery of paper ballots from polling places
  • Works as a team with Sheriff's Office staff

Supply Courier

  • Delivers supplies from the Elections Department to Polling Places
  • Must have clean driving record
  • Must have reliable transportation
