On May 8, 2012 several special districts within Douglas County will hold special elections. In order to better serve the citizens of Douglas County, the districts and their points of contact have been listed below to help voters find the assistance specific to their particular special district.

Who is in charge of my Special District Election?

The district's board designates a person to serve as the Designated Election Official (DEO) and to conduct the election for the district. The DEO can be anyone the board names (32-1-804(2), CRS).

What gives Special Districts the right to appoint a DEO?

Title 32-1-804(1), CRS gives the authority to conduct an election:
After the organization of a special district and the first board is elected, the district governs and conducts all subsequent regular and special elections. This includes rendering all interpretations and decision making regarding elections.

If I don't vote, will my voter registration be changed to inactive thereby preventing me from voting in future elections?

If a voter does not vote in a Special District Election, the voter will not become inactive for County, State or Federal elections.

If the district has fewer than 10,000 registered electors, the DEO shall mail a ballot to each eligible elector on the Permanent Mail-In Voter list provided to the DEO. (32-1-805(5)(b), CRS).

However, districts with more than 10,000 registered electors, (32‐1‐805(5)(b.7), CRS) may:

Choose not to deliver mail‐in ballots to an elector who has not returned a mail‐in ballot in the two most recent metropolitan district elections, but shall mail an elector by forwardable mail a postcard notice (no later than 45 days prior to the election) containing information on:

Casting a ballot a the polling place and location of the polling place.
Requesting a mail‐in ballot.
Contact information of the DEO.

Who pays for a Special District Election?

The Special District is responsible for all costs associated with the election for their district.

Why are the only items on my ballot for election of the Directors?

Special District Elections may or may not have additional issues on their ballots, as determined by their district.
