District Court
District courts have authority to handle many types of cases including divorces, civil claims in any amount, juvenile matters, adoptions, probate (estates and conservatorships), mental health and criminal cases.
County Court - Civil Matters
County court jurisdiction includes civil actions, lawsuits, and proceedings in which the debt, damage, or value of the personal property claimed is not over $15,000. Typically, county court civil cases involve debt collection, landlord/tenant disputes, and contract disputes.
Small Claims Court
This system allows people to argue their own cases and hear speedy decisions on civil matters involving no more than $7,500. There are no jury trials in small claims court. In small claims court, neither side can be represented by an attorney. No plaintiff may file more than two claims per month or 18 claims per year in small claims court.
Municipal Courts
Larkspur, Parker and Castle Rock municipal courts handle prosecution of all cases that violate city ordinance -- primarily traffic and other misdemeanor offenses. Judge Louis Gresh serves as municipal court administrator for Castle Rock and Larkspur.
