County Line Road (Broadway to University) Improvements

Updated July 2010

In January 2009, the Douglas County Board of County Commissioners awarded a contract to Felsburg, Holt, & Ullevig to assist the County in preparing the final design and bid documents for improving the segment of County Line Road between Broadway and University.  As of May 1, 2010, the final design was substantially completed, and we are currently working on acquiring additional right-of-way and easements, and coordinating the proposed utility relocations.  Douglas County is continuing to manage the corridor improvement projects; and we are working closely with the City of Centennial, the City of Littleton and the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) staff.  The local agencies hope that some day in the near future, this segment will be deemed eligible to receive much needed federal funding.  Federal funding is needed in order to assist the local agencies with the widening and reconstruction of this segment of County Line Road.  Because of limited regional funding and other higher regional priority projects, the Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG), presently does NOT consider this roadway capacity project eligible for federal funding.

Approximately $12 to $13 million in total project funding (which includes $3 to $4 million in local funding), is required to complete the identified improvements, which will be similar to those recently completed in 2009 along the segment of County Line Road between University and Colorado.  The proposed improvements include widening the existing roadway to four lanes, providing raised medians, adding sidewalks along both sides, reducing the steep roadway grade and improving sight distance by smoothing out the vertical alignment, especially near South Clarkson Street and adding a traffic signal at this intersection.  Additionally, the project will address noise concerns, and will incorporate the design and construction of noise walls along existing and adjacent residential properties. Construction is NOT likely to occur within the next four to six years, unless additional funding is secured from other funding sources.

For more information about this project, contact the Project Manager, Sean Owens, via email at sowens@douglas.co.us or by telephone at 303-660-7490.
