UPDATE ON PROPOSED ROUNDABOUTS FOR HAPPY CANYON ROAD

During 2010 and 2011, Douglas County has been working in cooperation with the Castle Pines Metropolitan District (CPMD), regarding the design of two proposed traffic roundabouts along Happy Canyon Road. The CPMD is ready to begin construction on this project tentatively the week of June 6, 2011. The CPMD awarded the contract for the roundabout construction project to Jalisco International, Inc. Happy Canyon Road will be open to traffic during construction - however, there will be restricted traffic movements and delays on Happy Canyon Road.
This project is funded 100% by CPMD. Construction Inspection will be conducted by Engineering Permits & Inspections staff during construction, with eventual acceptance for maintenance by the County. A "trial-run" to test the design of the proposed roundabout was held last year (2010) at the Douglas County Fairgrounds parking lot. This trial-run was a test of the accessibility the roundabouts would provide for larger vehicles such as fire trucks, school buses, semi- trucks, snow plows and stock trailers. These vehicles were provided by the Douglas County School District (school bus), Castle Rock Fire Department (fire trucks), Castle Pines Metro District (snow plow), Matt Clough with Clough Cattle Company (stock trailer), and Douglas County Public Works Operations (semi-truck). The trial-run was ultimately a success and no problems were encountered by any of the vehicles driving in the roundabout demonstration. After completing the trial-run, the designers determined that no adjustments would be necessary regarding the design.
