At one time another we have questions that we would like to get answered. But, where do we go for the answers?

We could go to the library, to the web, to friends who might know, to…where?

Here is the source for questions and answers concerning veterans, veterans benefits and services, and more.

Take a look at the current questions and see if yours is included. If not, send us an e-mail and we will respond to you directly, and post the answer here.

Our e-mail address is veterans_services@douglas.co.us. In the e-mail subject line put I Have a Question.

NEW

Q.   I heard there is a change in VA supplied eyeglasses, what is happening?

A.  Yes, there is a change. It appears that any veteran receiving disability compensation might be eligible, Contact the Office of Veterans Affairs for more details

NEW

Q.   I am a disabled veteran and I heard about a property tax exemption. Can I get this in addition to my senior exemption?

A.  Quick answer – NO. One can not receive two exemptions at the same time. If you are a 100% service connected permanently and totally disabled veteran, call your veterans service officer to explore if you can and should apply for the property tax exemption.

Q.  Can I have Medicare benefits and still receive health care services at VA

A. Yes. VA Health care depends primarily on annual Congressional appropriations, VA encourages veterans to retain any health care coverage they may already have, especially those in the lower enrollment priority groups. Veterans with private health insurance or with federally funded coverage through the Department of Defense (TRICARE), Medicare, or Medicaid, may choose to use these sources of coverage as a supplement to their VA benefits.

Q.  I heard that Health Care Priority Code 8s can now get Health Coverage?

A. Sort of. There still are family income limits that apply. The change is that veterans who are no more than 10% above the GMT (Geographic Means Test) are now eligible. A single veteran's GMT plus the 10% is $44,220, a vet with one dependent has a family income limit of $50,545.

Q.  I get some VA Benefits, disability compensation for a knee problem. Is that money taxable, must I report it on my 1040?

A. The short answer, no. Do not include in your income any veterans' benefits paid under any law, regulation, or administrative practice administered by the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA). The veteran will not receive a 1099 or any other tax forms from the VA. See IRS publication 907 (Tax Highlights for Persons with Disabilities)

Q.  The new GI Bill, named something like Post 9/11, seems to offer more money than the regular GI Bill. When it goes into effect, can I convert?

A. Yes, if you meet the requirements. If you are eligible for the Montgomery GI Bill, Montgomery GI Bill –Selected Reserve or the Reserve Educational Assistance Program (REAP) and qualify for the Post-9/11 GI Bill you can convert. It is an irrevocable election.

For more information, contact the Office of Veterans Affairs at 303-688-4825  Ext 5359. We have an updated brochure with lots of information on the Post-9/11 GI Bill.

Q.  I have heard that we veterans should not have our discharge, DD-214, recorded, it leads to identity theft. Yet, we are told to get the DD-2124 recorded and certified, that it is needed to apply for benefits. What should I do?

A.  Get it recorded. Also, get the two free certified copies. Then keep the original in a safe place, such as a safe deposit box. Use the certified copies when proof of service is needed.

Colorado has a law that removes discharge documents, usually the DD-214, from the classification of “Public Records.” Under most conditions, only the veteran can get access to the record. If the veteran is deceased, Immediate Family can request a copy. The request must be in writing.
