Charles Lamb never expected to find the remains of Columbian mammoth, ancient camel, bison and ground sloth when he began, in 1960, to develop a stock pond on his cattle ranch. The Smithsonian Institution conducted intensive archaeological excavations in 1960-1961 and 1980-1981 which revealed mammoth remains dating back 13,000 years and a possible link to the some of the earliest people to inhabit North America. The site is now preserved through a cooperative agreement between the Archaeological Conservancy and Douglas County.
Free tours are offered in partnership with the Lamb Spring Archaeological Preserve Board, Douglas County Community Planning and Sustainable Development, and the Archaeological Conservancy each month from May through October. The program begins at 9:30 a.m. with an introductory video explaining the excavations that have occurred at the site. Visitors then drive to the parking area and walk the distance of about two city blocks to the site.
Please contact Douglas County at 303.660.7460 if you would like to make a reservation.
