Object ID:
2013.007.09
Object Name:
Bottle, Condiment
Description:
The mouth—blown clear glass ketchup is identified with a circular raised embossed logo. Inside the logo in a circular pattern it reads: "CURTICE BROTHERS CO ROCHESTER NY. Across the logo it reads: " PRESERVES". The Curtice Brothers, Simeon and Edwin, had a grocery store in Webster, NY a prime growing area for fruits. They made jams and jellies in their mother's kitchen after hours. Eventually they found a canning company in 1868, headquartered in Rochester, NY. However, there produce came, mainly from the Genesee Valley south of Rochester.
The bottle dates from the 1900 to 1915 era based on the "improved" tooled external screw thread finish known as a "screw top tool finish" by glassmakers of the era. Mold seams are present from the lip to the bottom of the bottle. A faint amethyst tint to the glass is visible near the cup—bottom, further indicating the bottle was manufactured during the first two decades of the 20th century. Vertical body ridges are evident on the bottom half of the bottle. In that portion, a rectagular, smooth glass area exists where the original label would have read:
"Blue Label Tomato Ketshup Rochester, New York, U.S.A.
The narrow bore measures 0.68 inches on the inside. From the top of the bottle to the vertical ridges, measures. 5.9 inches. From the ridged area to the bottom of the bottle, the measurement is 4.48 inches. The bottom of the bottle measures 2.75 inches and the raised lettering, BB CC 283 is observed.
