Zoning regulations regarding household pets and other small animals, livestock and related issues such as devegetation caused by grazing large animals, are addressed in Section 24 of the Douglas County Zoning Resolution. Zone Districts and Animal Limits

A-1 – Agriculture One

Thirty-five acres or greater (buffalo, ostrich, emu are permitted on conforming A-1):

  • NO LIMIT ON HORSES OR OTHER DOMESTIC LIVESTOCK
  • Thirty-five acres and up:
    • Four boarded horses allowed.
    • Five to 12 boarded allowed by administrative review.
  • Eighty acres and up:
    • Twelve boarded horses allowed.
    • Thirteen to 18 boarded allowed by administrative review.
  • One hundred sixty acres and up.
    • Unlimited boarding – all setbacks must be 500 feet from the adjacent residential structure.

Setbacks – street 100 feet, side 50 feet, rear 50 feet.

Devegetation – 5.2 acres or 10 percent - whichever is greater – regular removal of manure required.

 

Large Rural Residential (LRR)

Minimum of nine to 34.9 acres

  • NO LIMIT ON HORSES OR OTHER DOMESTIC LIVESTOCK
    • Two boarded horses allowed by right.
    • Three to eight allowed by administrative review.

Setbacks – street 100 feet, side 50 feet, rear 25 feet.

Devegetation – two acres or 15 percent - whichever is greater – regular removal of manure required.

 

Rural Residential (RR)

Minimum of 4.48–8.9 acres

  • ONE ANIMAL UNIT PER ½ ACRE
    • Two boarded horses allowed by right – included in maximum number of animal units allowed.

Setbacks – street 50 feet, side 25 feet, rear 25 feet.

Devegetation – 1.25 acres or 20 percent - whichever is greater – regular removal of manure required.

ER – Estate Residential

Minimum of 2.3–4.49 acres

  • ONE ANIMAL UNIT PER ½ ACRE
    • One boarded horse allowed by right – included in maximum number of animal units allowed.

Setbacks – street 25 feet, side 25 feet, rear 25 feet.

Devegetation – 25 percent of total site - whichever is greater – regular removal of manure required.

 

Animal Notes

No more than four cats/dogs of more than four months of age per household. Kennels, boarding facilities, and commercial activities are NOT allowed.

* HORSE/MULE/COW/LLAMA 1 = one animal unit

* MINIATURE HORSE/SWINE/SHEEP/GOAT/ALPACA 4 = one animal unit

Animals less than six months of age do not count toward the allowable unit limit.
