Your new east-west road connection is coming along

Get behind the scenes of construction for the Waterton Road extension project in northwest Douglas County

Posted on March 1, 2022 2022News and EventsTransportation

You can’t see it, but inside every roadway bridge is foundational material, called rebar, that secures the structural integrity of the concrete road surface. Within the new bridge over Willow Creek along the Waterton Road extension project, there are 370,768 pounds of rebar – or about 19 T-Rex’s worth.

Before year’s end, the Waterton Road extension will provide a new east-west route for residents in northwest Douglas County. One major piece of this project is that bridge over Willow Creek – which you might be interested to know achieved a major milestone this week.

More than two dozen construction crews on Monday, Feb. 28, poured 1,620 cubic yards (or about 150 concrete mixer trucks worth) of concrete to form the surface of the bridge – transforming the bridge from rows of concrete beams and rebar to a drive-able surface.

Construction through this fall will include a new storm sewer system beneath the road, asphalt paving, and fiber installation. Once this final phase of the Waterton Road extension project is completed later this year, a new 5-mile east-west connection from U.S. 85 to Rampart Range Road will open.

The County’s 2040 Transportation Master Plan identifies the need for this project to give those in Roxborough Village, Chatfield Farms, Roxborough Downs, River Canyon and Sterling Ranch an alternative to Titan Road for access to US 85.

A safe and accessible multimodal transportation network is one of the Board of County Commissioner’s six core priorities. Read more about the County’s transportation initiatives online.
