If you enjoy outdoor recreation along the South Platte River, you’ll want to plan for some traffic delays near Scraggy Viewpoint and Sugar Creek Road. Following significant shoulder loss along a section of Platte River Road near Scraggy Viewpoint, Douglas County is preparing a major stabilization and safety repair project to protect the roadway and ensure safe travel for residents.
Recent heavy rains combined with existing groundwater issues have caused erosion along the riverbank adjacent to the road. Over time, the Platte River has washed away a part of the shoulder, reducing structural support beneath the asphalt. Douglas County has been monitoring the site for more than a year, and recent storms have accelerated degradation, prompting an urgent response.
Safety concerns and temporary measures
With the approach of winter weather and extra moisture, maintaining traffic near the eroded shoulder has become a major safety concern due to the compromised structural support of the roadway.
To maintain safe passage until weather allows for long-term repairs, the County has installed a temporary traffic control system with a one-way stoplight near the damaged section. This system will help manage vehicle flow and reduce the risk of accidents. Traffic will only use the northbound inside lane, but wait times are expected to be less than 5 minutes. The temporary signal will operate in coordination with the existing stoplight at the nearby bridge repair site.
Drivers should expect traffic delays and are encouraged to use alternate routes whenever possible. South County Highway 67 is recommended as a detour for those traveling to Woodland Park or Sedalia.
Design and construction timeline for long-term repairs
Douglas County is completing the design of a long-term stabilization project. Plans are underway to rebuild a section of the roadway and reinforce the riverbank. Construction on the permanent repairs is expected to begin in early spring 2026, weather permitting. Crews will continue to monitor this area throughout the year.
Residents are advised to stay alert for changing traffic patterns, signage, and ongoing construction activities as preparations continue through the winter months.
