Douglas County recognizes National Volunteer Month in April, National Volunteer Week April 21-27, and introduces “Dougnad” to promote and encourage service

Update, April 19: Please note, due to forecasted weather on Saturday, April 20, some events have been canceled. 

You give more than you take in Douglas County – we see that every year in the thousands of you who volunteer in various capacities to keep our community safe, joyful and beautiful.

In this spirit, at their regularly scheduled Business Meeting April 9, your Board of Douglas County Commissioners formally recognized April as National Volunteer Month, April 21-27 as National Volunteer Week and proclaimed a “Dougnad” volunteer season.

No matter your age or ability, you’re invited to be a part of one or many local volunteer events this month including:

April 19: Trash pickup at Challenger Regional Park in Parker, 10 a.m. – noon

April 20: Earth Day Willow Harvest and Planting in Castle Rock, 9-11 a.m.

Canceled due to weather: April 20: Dougnad: Celebration of Volunteering at Highland Heritage Regional Park, 9-11:30 a.m.

April 20: Cleanup Earth Day event at Dupont Open Space, noon – 3 p.m.

Canceled due to weather: April 20: Renew the Ranch and Arbor Day events in Highlands Ranch, 9-11 a.m.

April 21: Cleanup and Earth Day celebration at Columbine Open Space, noon – 3 p.m.

April 22: Earth Day Shoreline Cleanup at Bingham Lake Park in Parker, 10 a.m. – noon

April 26: Arbor Day Seedling planting at Pinery Park in Parker, 9 a.m. – noon

What is “Dougnad”?
Dougnad is based upon a Norwegian tradition known as “dugnad.” Dugnad is best described as a community day or service event where work is performed as part of a social gathering.

Every year, your County is thankful for the time investment of hundreds of volunteers. If the April events listed above don’t work for you, there are plenty of volunteer opportunities available.

From helping older adults to gardening and bird watching to bringing our annual Douglas County Fair & Rodeo to life or adopting a roadway, we invite you to explore the variety of opportunities available via our webpage.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is looking for Reserve Deputies, Community Safety Volunteers, Search and Rescue Volunteers, Victim Advocates and Explorers (age 14-20). Visit their webpage to learn more.
