Mental Health Initiative

With the support of the Douglas County Commissioners, and in response to several tragic mental health-related incidents, the Douglas County Mental Health Initiative (DCMHI) was established in 2014 to unite community partners, address unmet mental health needs, connect people to mental health services and prevent those in need from falling through the cracks of the mental health system.

History and Milestones

2014
The Douglas County Mental Health Initiative (DCMHI) was established after a series of tragic events in and around Douglas County

2015 – 2016
Process mapping with DCMHI partners to assess the county’s mental health system, identify gaps, and develop collaborative solutions.

2017
The Community Response Team (CRT) program launched and began a four-month pilot.  The Board of Douglas County Commissioners approved ongoing general funds to support the CRT program following the pilot.

2018
CRT program is the recipient of a 2018 ICMA Local Government Program Excellence Award in Community Health and Safety

2018 – 2019
Douglas County worked with Health Management Associates (HMA) to design a Blueprint for a community-based mental health delivery system (Blueprint). HMA facilitates surveys, focus groups, key informant interviews, data review and group work to inform the Blueprint. HMA presents the Blueprint to the DCMHI and launched the effort.

2019
Upon review of 2018 data, and following the STEM School shooting, the Douglas County Commissioners appropriate ongoing funding for the creation of a Youth Community Response Team.

DCMHI aligned the governance structure with the Blueprint to support implementation and sustainability. County and partners began facilitation of workgroups to advance strategies identified in the Blueprint.

The Youth CRT team launched and began responding in schools, bringing active CRTs in Douglas County to four.

2020
Douglas County formed The Care Compact leadership team to set parameters for a pilot.

DCMHI relaunched the Let’s Talk Anti-Stigma Campaign and films Let’s Talk PSAs with local leaders and local faces to localize the messages for a Douglas County audience.

The Care Compact pilot was launched.

2021
Web-based resource Toolkit pilot launched with youth.
