When it comes to keeping our community healthy, knowledge is power – for all of us.

Containing infectious diseases in our community – such as E. coli, Salmonella, and rabies – takes both community reporting and health department investigation. Today, the Douglas County Health Department will begin this work by providing disease surveillance and prevention services for Douglas County citizens.

State law requires many communicable diseases to be reported to the public health department within certain timeframes. To protect the community against rabies, all animal bites that break the skin and all contact with bats should be reported to the health department.

In partnership with local schools and early childhood education centers, the Douglas County Health Department will work to contain disease outbreaks. Any suspected outbreak of illnesses like whooping cough, chicken pox or RSV, should also be reported.

Douglas County Health Department is committed to maintaining continuity of public health services for Douglas County residents. Emergency preparedness and communicable disease services will be provided by DCHD beginning July 1. Vital records have been offered since June 1. All other public health services will continue to be provided by Tri-County Health Department.

Douglas County Health Department will work closely with Tri-County Health Department to ensure the needs of community members are met throughout the transition. Please continue to work with Tri-County Health Department for other public health services, including health care services, parent and child health, and WIC.
