Voters decided during the June 24 Special Election that a Home Rule Charter Commission would not be formed at this time. Unofficial results show ballot question 1A failing with 71% of voters voting against the measure.
“Throughout this campaign, voters faced an onslaught of outside special interests, throwing hundreds of thousands of dollars at our community, flooding social media with disinformation and, quite frankly, lies. There’s no other way to put it. False accusations and failed lawsuits from individuals whose credibility is questionable only added to the intentional confusion surrounding this critical issue,” said Douglas County Commissioner George Teal. “Despite the outcome, I want to be clear: the Douglas County Board of Commissioners remains steadfast in our belief that preserving local control and amplifying the voices of our communities is vital.”
“As we reflect on the outcome of the Home Rule Charter ballot measure, I want to acknowledge the voices of all Douglas County voters,” said Commissioner Abe Laydon. “While this decision may be a reaction from one group on national issues, it also presents us with a vital opportunity locally to unite and move forward together to create an even stronger Douglas County. Your Board of County Commissioners will continue to fight for what is right for our communities, ensuring that all voices are heard and respected.”
“This is a moment of reflection for us all,” said Commissioner Kevin Van Winkle. “I look forward to continuing the conversation about the importance of local governance and working together to unite our community around all that makes Douglas County so special.”
