At a Business Meeting on June 10, the Board formally voiced its support for Home Rule in Douglas County.
This week, the Douglas County Board of Commissioners voted to formally support the formation of a Home Rule Charter Commission.
At a Business Meeting on Tuesday, June 10, the Board unanimously voted to adopt a resolution voicing their support of Home Rule in Douglas County and calling on residents to vote ‘Yes’ to the creation of a Home Rule Charter Commission during a Special Election on June 24.
The resolution details the Board’s view that Home Rule is necessary to protect Douglas County’s authority over matters of local concern, residents’ constitutional rights, and the County’s land, water, and environment. In the resolution, the Board expresses its concern over statewide policies adopted by the Colorado General Assembly and advocates for Home Rule’s ability to preserve the identity of Douglas County and establish strong local control.
During the Special Election, held on June 24, 2025, voters will decide 1) whether to form a Charter Commission and 2) to select 21 Charter Commission Members, who will be tasked with drafting a proposed Charter.

“Local control under Home Rule would increase our ability to deal with issues like homelessness, public safety, and immigration,” said Commissioner Abe Laydon, Board Chair. “Home Rule would also allow us to provide residents with economic support through lower property taxes during tough economic times.”
“I am very much an advocate for Home Rule, and I very much believe everything that’s written here in this resolution,” said Commissioner George Teal. “I encourage my colleagues, after hearing public comment, to vote ‘Yes’ on this resolution, and for all Douglas County residents to vote ‘Yes’ in the June 24 Special Election.”
“A government that is close to the people has shown time and time again to be more responsive to and efficient for its people than faraway legislators,” said Commissioner Kevin Van Winkle. “I am a sincere supporter of today’s resolution.”
