Success Stories

Behind every data point is a real person and real progress. These success stories highlight the impact of the Douglas County Homeless Initiative, showing how collaboration, care and community resources are helping people overcome homelessness and move toward lasting stability. These stories wouldn’t be possible without our dedicated Homeless Engagement, Assistance and Resource Team, our community partners and all the generous people who have donated through DouglasHasHeart.org.

We were a family of 10 with nowhere to go.

After our eviction in August 2024, we didn’t know what to do. We were scared and unsure of where to turn. That’s when we got connected with HEART. They helped us with motel vouchers to keep us safe while working with so many caring organizations through the Douglas County Care Compact. Month after month, these partners helped us find the support we needed—employment, school, mental health care and eventually housing. In December, we moved into our own space through the GOALS Program. Now, we’re stable, thriving and beyond grateful for the help we received from HEART, The Rock Church, Family Tree, Douglas County Youth Services, and so many others.

HEART helped me start over, and I have a home now.

I was being evicted and didn’t know where to turn. That’s when Greg from HEART showed up. He listened to me, asked the right questions and found out I was a Veteran. I wasn’t even enrolled with the VA at the time. Greg got me on the Veterans By Name List and worked with his partners to help me move forward. Thanks to their efforts, I now have permanent housing and support through the Supportive Services for Veteran Families program. I'm still working with my case manager, and for the first time in a long time, I feel stable and hopeful.

I was stranded far from home, and HEART got me back to my family.

I was hitchhiking on I-25 in Castle Rock after getting stranded in Colorado after attending a court hearing. A concerned driver called HEART, and soon Katie, along with Nick from from the Sheriff’s Office, found me. They made sure I was safe, and when I told them I just wanted to get back to my family in New Mexico, they helped make that happen. Katie got me a hotel room for the night and a bus ticket home. I’m back with my family now, and I can’t thank them enough for their kindness.

From living in my car to a new apartment, HEART never gave up on me.

In February, I became homeless for the first time and had to live in my car in Castle Rock. I was scared and overwhelmed. That’s when Alyssa from HEART found me. She helped me with food, gas, clothing and places to stay on the coldest nights. I applied for apartments and every week, and by early March, I was able to call her with the best news: I had just moved into my new apartment! I’m now settled and working toward a better future, thanks to Alyssa and the nonprofits she connected me with.

With disabilities and nowhere to go, I didn’t think anyone could help.

Living in my car while dealing with serious disabilities felt impossible. I struggled every day with my health and didn’t see a way out. Then I met Greg from HEART, and everything began to change. He brought together churches, nonprofits and care providers that were committed to helping me. They got me into an assisted living facility where I finally feel safe and cared for. Local churches even made sure my service animal had what she needed too. I now live with dignity, thanks to people who believed in me.

After years in hotels, I finally found a place to call home.

I had been living in and out of hotels for four years. As I got older, my memory worsened, and I didn’t have medical coverage, food help or even my Social Security benefits. It felt like I was falling through every crack. But the HEART team stepped in, connected me with the right programs, and worked with their partners to get me into an assisted living facility. Now I have support, friendship and a safe home where I’m finally getting the care I need.
