Did you know that among your neighbors in Douglas County, about 27,000 (7.7% of the population) are Veterans? To honor the service and sacrifice of these men and women in advance of Veterans Day, Douglas County is taking part in Operation Green Light for Veterans, Tuesday, Nov. 4 – Tuesday, Nov. 11 (Veterans Day).
Led by the National Association of Counties (NACo), Operation Green Light is an opportunity for communities to recognize the sacrifices made by our Veterans and their families by illuminating public buildings in green for one week. The initiative also raises awareness around the unique challenges faced by many Veterans and the resources available at the county, state and federal levels to assist Veterans and their families.
As part of Operation Green Light, Douglas County will illuminate three buildings in Castle Rock – the Philip. S Miller Building, Wilcox Street Building, and the Justice Center. The County facility on Lansing Point in Meridian will also be illuminated.
In addition to lighting county buildings, residents, businesses and other organizations are encouraged to participate by simply changing one light bulb in their home to a green bulb. This can be an exterior light that neighbors and passersby see or an interior light that sparks a conversation with family and friends. By shining a green light, we let our Veterans know that they are seen, appreciated, and supported.
“We are a county that stands behind and honors the service and sacrifice of our nation’s heroes,” said Commissioner George Teal. “As a Board, we hope our participation in Operation Green Light showcases the pride we have in those who have bravely served our country to protect our freedoms and inspires appreciation and support for our service members.”
Also in honor of the men and women of the armed forces, the Board of Douglas County Commissioners, Douglas County Veterans Service Office and the Douglas County Veterans Monument Foundation invite you to a Veterans Day ceremony to honor our American heroes. The event begins at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, at the Veterans Monument Plaza, 301 Wilcox St. in Castle Rock. Visit our webpage to learn more about the event.
