Douglas County Board of County Commissioners gathered with local partners to celebrate groundbreaking

Is County Line Road part of your daily commute? If so, it’s time to start planning for construction impacts.

Douglas County, in partnership with the City of Centennial, City of Littleton, Highlands Ranch Metro District, and contractors JHL and Benesch, has broken ground to begin construction on the County Line Road Reconstruction and Widening Project between University Boulevard and Broadway.

“County Line Road is the perfect example of why collaboration matters. This corridor is heavily traveled and essential to multiple communities, but no one city or county could take on this project alone. Each partner at this table – DRCOG, Douglas County, the City of Centennial, and the City of Littleton – contributed to make this possible,” shared Commissioner Kevin Van Winkle.

County Line Road separates Douglas and Arapahoe counties and is a major arterial road for residents, businesses and commuters in Highlands Ranch, Littleton and Centennial. In fact, this section of County Line Road between University Boulevard and Broadway averages 25,000 road users each day. The project will facilitate a safer and smoother connection for residents, commuters and first responders alike. The project includes:

Commissioner Abe Laydon said, “This road is more than a line on a map. It is a shared lifeline that carries families to schools, connects workers to jobs, and supports businesses that drive our economy. It is also the road our first responders use to reach emergencies, no matter which side of the city or county boundary those calls may come from.”

Major Traffic Impacts

Later this year, motorists should anticipate a full closure of County Line Road from Clarkson Street to the U-Haul business access area. The closure will last approximately 100 days, giving crews time to import dirt for construction at Lee Gulch. Business access will be maintained via County Line Road. Residential access to Clarkson Street will be maintained via Dry Creek Road.

About the Project
Douglas County, in partnership with the City of Littleton, City of Centennial and the Denver Regional Council of Governments, started construction on the County Line Road Widening and Reconstruction Project between University and Broadway in September 2025. The $30 million project will improve safety and mobility and include one additional travel lane in each direction, a new traffic signal at the Clarkson Street and County Line Road intersection, mill and overlay for the portion of road within the City of Littleton between Phillips Avenue and Broadway, and the addition of new sidewalks, which will increase safety and mobility in the area. Project completion is slated for September 2027.
