The most common maintenance activity performed on gravel roads is routine grading. Periodically, roads are graded and then compacted to smooth out surface irregularities such as corrugation or “washboards,” potholes, and ruts. “Washboards” and potholes typically form on hills, curves, flat areas and near stop signs where vehicle braking occurs. Traffic and speed impact the frequency and severity of washboards formation.
To achieve proper compaction and a tight surface, water is frequently applied using tankers with spray bars.
To request grading, please submit a request using the Report a Problem form and select “Gravel Road Maintenance.”
