Community Services

Faith-Based Community Work

In partnership with other agencies, nonprofits, the faith community, businesses and residents, Douglas County has launched several initiatives to help our community.

Douglas County Initiatives

Domestic Violence Safehouse

Domestic violence is far more common than many people realize and affects individuals and families from every walk of life — regardless of age, gender, income, or background. Survivors often face enormous physical, emotional, and financial hurdles when attempting to escape abuse and begin rebuilding their lives. That’s why a strong, coordinated community response is so important.

In Douglas County, dedicated nonprofit organizations like TESSA and the Crisis Center offer safe, confidential, and trauma-informed services to help survivors find stability and healing. From emergency shelter to legal advocacy and mental health counseling, these services are critical in helping individuals break free from abuse and begin the path toward safety and independence.

Douglas County Homeless Initiative

The Douglas County Homeless Initiative (DCHI) values everyone in our community and uses a person-focused approach to balance compassion and public safety with the complex challenges of the unhoused.  DCHI utilizes a collaborative approach between the county, law enforcement, city council members, mayors, non-profit organizations, and business owners to develop strategies that help address these challenges.  We focus on the possibility that comes with INITIATIVE among everyone working together under the “Four Cs”:

Link on Demand

This app-based on-demand transportation option gives you free access to rides across Lone Tree and Highlands Ranch. This service is designed to improve local mobility by providing flexible transportation options for people who may not have access to a personal vehicle or traditional fixed-route transit.

Older Adult Resources

Looking for support, services or connection as an older adult, or for someone you care about? Douglas County’s Older Adult Initiative has partnered with local organizations to provide essential programs for residents aged 60 and older. Whether you need help with transportation, in-home support, housing, meals or simply someone to talk to, resources are available to help you stay healthy, safe and independent.

In 2015, the County initiated a dialogue with local church leaders to strengthen partnerships and serve vulnerable populations.  Meetings resulted in a Faith-Based Partnership with local churches and church leaders to collectively identify and address the needs of residents in Douglas County.  The Board of Douglas County Commissioners welcomes the participation of all our local faith communities to participate on one of our active projects.

Faith-Based Roundtable

Have you been looking for meaningful ways to give back to your neighbors experiencing hardship? We invite you to join Douglas County’s Faith-Based Roundtables. Roundtables offer a unique opportunity for people of all faiths to come together and take actionable steps towards making a lasting impact in the lives of community members.

People from all faiths are welcome!

The next Roundtable of 2025 will be on Thursday, August 21, location TBD. If you have questions, please email [email protected]

CarePortal

CarePortal creates connection between families, churches and the community to meet the needs of vulnerable children. CarePortal is a technology-connecting platform that brings the needs of hurting children and families in your community to your attention.  Caseworkers uncover the needs.  CarePortal makes local churches and community members aware, giving them a real-time opportunity to respond.  For more information on how your church can support CarePortal in Douglas County, please visit https://www.careportal.org/

Foster Care and Adoption

Churches have traditionally been strong supporters of children through foster care and adoption.  Douglas County’s churches are no exception. For more information on how your church can support children, visit https://www.collaborativefostercare.com/

Invocation

Citizens who are leaders of an organized group or congregation that regularly meets in Douglas County now have an opportunity to deliver an invocation, up to 2 minutes in duration, at the Commissioners’ Business Meetings, on the second or fourth Tuesday of each month.  Those interested can submit an online interest form.
