The Department of Public Works Engineering works in accordance with sound engineering principles and practices providing oversight, design, rural road design, construction, operation, maintenance, and implementation of infrastructure and program needs for Douglas County in compliance with adopted criteria, policies, and procedures, including the 2040 Transportation Master Plan. This includes review and approval of construction plans and reports for new development of subdivisions and commercial site plans, as well as all capital improvement projects. All road construction and grading, drainage and erosion control, temporary access and special event permits (excluding building permits) are issued through Public Works Engineering. In addition, all inspection of the construction of public infrastructure is performed by the Department of Public Works Engineering.
Transportation Engineering and Traffic Operations staff plan, design and monitor the roads, streets, and highways to ensure safe and efficient movement of people and goods, including traffic counts and the Comprehensive Bicycle Plan. These tasks include long-range transportation planning as well as recommendations for integrating freeways, streets, shopping centers, residential developments, and industrial projects into the community that will serve the populations safely and efficiently.
Engineering staff also takes a proactive role in the management of its stormwater system, flood plain information and sidewalk algae and ice, and provides services to its citizens through coordination between federal, state, and local government for compliance to federally-mandated programs, including the Colorado Clean Water Coalition.
