How to Quit Smoking

If you’re ready to stop smoking, we’ve created free quit-kits that support the key elements for successful quitting.

Here’s what you’ll find inside the quit-kit:

A journal for reflection. Quitting smoking is physical, but it’s also emotional. It is important to be clear about the reasons you want to quit. Spend some time envisioning what your life will be like once you quit smoking. What will you gain? How will you feel? How will your quality of life improve? Being able to think of the reasons why you want to quit smoking can often be enough to get you through a critical 10 minutes without having a cigarette.
A tin of cinnamon mints and lollipops. It’s important to anticipate moments when you will want to smoke and think about why a cigarette feels necessary. Is it a habit to put something in your mouth? This is normal. That’s why we have provided you with other options!
A stress ball and coloring book with pencils. You may be used to spending a lot of time smoking and you might experience quite a bit of downtime when you quit. If you get anxious about not having anything in your hands, squeeze our stress ball. If you need an activity to get your mind off your cravings, try the coloring book! Often, it’s easier to work at doing something than it is to work at doing nothing. Replacing old habits with new ones can be very effective.
A rubber band. This is intended to be a quick reminder to “snap out of it” when you begin craving a cigarette. Maybe you keep it around your wrist or in your purse to provide a visual reminder of your goals.
A list of community resources. After all, no one said you have to do this alone. The Douglas County Health Department partners with organizations that can often provide free and anonymous support for community members looking to quit smoking. View the list of resources on our support page. While we cannot provide individuals with medication and nicotine replacement therapy, some of these organizations can assist with that.

Just remember, that even if you try to stop smoking and don’t succeed the first time, you are building resilience and learning more about your habits. Every attempt gives us tools we can use to next time.
