Public Awareness

Redirecting Generosity Toward Long-Term Solutions

Douglas County is a community known for compassion, and our public awareness campaigns reflect our shared commitment to helping neighbors experiencing homelessness in meaningful, lasting ways. Two key efforts, Handouts Don’t Help and Douglas Has Heart, encourage safe, effective ways to contribute to the solution.

Handouts don't help sign Handouts Don’t Help

Handouts Don’t Help is Douglas County’s compassionate giving campaign, designed to redirect generosity toward long-term solutions for individuals experiencing homelessness. Instead of giving directly to panhandlers, the campaign encourages donations to trusted organizations through the Douglas County Community Foundation via DouglasHasHeart.org. Coordinated signage has been installed across the County to educate the community and redirect generosity toward lasting impact. View current sign locations.

Business owners and community organizations are invited to be part of this effort. By displaying free posters, postcards or digital graphics, your organization can raise awareness and encourage smart giving. Campaign materials are available at no cost and help connect those in need with meaningful, long-term support.
