Fiber internet is a high-speed internet service delivered through fiber optic cables, consisting of thin strands of glass that transmit data as pulses of light. The technology allows data to travel over long distances at incredibly fast speeds. Unlike cable internet, fiber optic doesn’t rely heavily on electrical power. Therefore, fiber internet is not only faster, but more reliable than cable internet.
Google (GFiber), BAM Broadband, CenturyLink/Lumen, and Comcast are all utility companies working in Highlands Ranch on fiber operations.
Fiber installation construction plans are approved by Douglas County both within the Right-of-Way (ROW) and within public utility easements on private property. Construction oversight is also provided by Douglas County Inspections staff. Each utility company is responsible for their own installation, construction impacts and schedule.
Homeowners cannot restrict access to public utility easements. Crews have a legal right to install, repair or maintain fiber infrastructure. Each utility company must work with the necessary local agencies and the County to obtain all the required permits to complete any fiber work.
Prior to the start of construction, each utility company is required to provide you notice. This may include direct mail notices, emails, door tags, and/or in-person visits from the construction teams. If you live in an HOA, utility companies have processes in place to ensure residents are alerted of fiber construction. In addition to notifying the HOA points of contact and property managers, they may mail letters or postcards to residents in the HOA or place door hangers before construction begins.
Permitted fiber construction activities are generally allowed between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. No weekend work is typically allowed.
Ahead of construction, utility companies are required to contact 811 and work with other underground utility companies to locate existing utilities. Existing utilities will be marked with paint and flags, which is required by law. The paint and flags may be placed on your property, and we ask that you do not move or remove these flags. State regulations require these markers to remain in place until construction is complete, and they are there for your safety and crew safety. When construction is complete, crews will remove the flags when they are no longer needed.
Fiber installation varies by each utility company, but generally you can expect this work to happen in four steps.
If you know which utility company is installing or repairing fiber in your area, it is best to contact them directly. If you are unsure which utility company is installing your fiber, you can contact Douglas County’s information hotline at 719-888-5301 or email us at [email protected] to be directed to the appropriate representative.
